California living, styled for every season

The California Edit

Welcome to The California Edit, a twice-monthly roundup of the things that inspire me most right now. From beautiful interiors and coastal decor, to effortless California style and entertaining finds, this is where I share the best of Golden State living.

Hello! It’s been a busy couple of weeks around here at the beach. I made a quick trip up to the Bay Area last week for an appointment and to see my mom. We have a few more weeks in San Diego (plus a trip to the southwest) before we head back up to the Bay Area for the summer.

In between commitments in the Bay Area I was able to do a little spring clothing shopping for myself. Do you shop at Evereve? We’re lucky enough to have one in the East Bay and I love popping in to see what’s new. I think there around 8 stores in California split between the Bay Area/Sacramento region and Los Angeles.

I love their ever-changing selection of on-trend clothing. My mission was to find some new pants and shorts and I did find a few pairs. In fact, I’m sharing one of my them on today’s edit.

Today’s Edit

On today’s edit, I’m sharing the perfect accessories for summer, my new comfy pants, a yummy-smelling room spray, pretty olive oil bottles for your kitchen counter, and some cool coastal accessories for your home. Let’s get to it!

Inspiring Spaces

Sometimes a picture catches my eye and I stop to take a closer look. That’s what happened when I saw this photo from Pure Salt Interiors. There’s so much to love here! The plants, the natural shelving, the wall treatment and the neutral furnishings are classic California style.

Side note – The fiddle leaf fig tree in the corner makes me miss my big fiddle leaf (below) that (I thought) had croaked over the winter. I put it outside on our deck and what do you know it’s starting to regrow, even though I was sure it was a goner. Who knew they could come back from the dead? I welcome any tips for how to encourage it to keep growing. I’ll keep you posted on its progress!

For the Home

Xander Jug

A few black accessories can do wonders in a light and bright space — they ground the room and give the eye somewhere to land. In the image above, the piece that stopped me first was the sculptural black Xander Jug from Pure Salt. That long handle and tapered base are simply stunning. The lines are clean and classic with just enough modern edge that this jug could hold its own in almost any interior.

Driftwood Finds

I know I’ve already written about driftwood ad nauseam, including in this post; however, it’s my blog 😉, so I’m sharing this find from Wayfair. These sanded branches come from California and are available in three lengths: 12”, 18” and 24”. The prices are reasonable too, compared to what I’ve seen elsewhere. So if you live in a place that’s far from any water, these are a great option if you want to add a little coastal style to your home.

A Coastal Room Spray

A dear friend gave me this room spray as a hostess gift and I love how it smells. It’s from Pottery Barn’s Dune Scent Collection and it’s called Ocean Breeze. The scent is lovely and not overpowering, with hints of Marine Accord, Ylang Ylang, Tonka Bean, Coconut Milk, Italian Bergamot, Vanilla Musk and Teakwood. Perfect for the summer months! I have ours in our powder room to keep things smelling fresh.

For the Kitchen

A Cruet Set

I’m always on the hunt for items that make the everyday more beautiful. Instead of having a collection of random olive oil bottles cluttering your kitchen counter, how about this pretty ceramic cruet set? The Carmel Ceramic Cruet Set with Tray by Gaby Dalkin from Crate & Barrel comes with two cruets and a matching tray to corral them both in. Their simple, neutral design would look great in any kitchen. I love that they have a touch of gold too. If you’re in need of a nice hostess gift, these would be great. They’re definitely being added to the shopping list for our Bay Area kitchen.

Getting Dressed

Joelle Cargo Pant

I almost didn’t try these on at Evereve but I’m so glad I did! Cargo pants are back in style, and these are super comfy and flattering. Made from a linen, lyocell and spandex blend, they are perfect for the warmer months ahead. The cream color will go with everything and I know I will get a lot of wear out of them.

Sam Edelman Women’s Mackie Flats

I want to shout from the rooftops about these espadrille flats from San Edelman. These shoes are adorable and also ridiculously comfortable. I bought the  brushed gold/cyprus tan net mesh style. They will go with just about everything in my closet, including my new cargo pants.

Seriously, you need to try these shoes on! They have a soft cushioned insole and an adjustable buckle strap to get the perfect fit, plus they come in whole and half sizes. They will be great for dressing up and down. And did I mention they’re comfortable?

Brown Straw Hats

My newest fixation is on sun hats. I have a hard time finding women’s hats that fit my head. Being tall, I also happen to have a larger head than a lot of women and hat shopping can be super frustrating. I’ve often bought men’s hats because they have larger sizes.

So when I spotted this adorable brown woven hat from Jenni Kayne, I tried not to get too excited because I figured it would be too small like most. I did a little research online before ordering. It turns out the M/L fits up to 59cm, which is just about perfect for my 60cm head.

Although it’s a little more money than I wanted to spend on a hat, it’s worth it to find one that I like that actually fits ! I know I will use for a long time. (I will say that their packaging left a lot to be desired though. The hat came folded in a beat-up plastic bag, so it has some creases that I’m hoping will relax over time.🙁)

Another good option at a (much) lower price point is this brown sun hat from Amazon. It has a very similar style and good reviews, so if you have a “normal-sized” head, this might be one for you!

What I’m Watching

Project Hail Mary

Have you seen Project Hail Mary yet? What did you think? We went to an actual movie theater and watched it, which we rarely do anymore. It gets a Siskel and Ebert two thumbs up from me!

In case you haven’t heard, it’s the story of science teacher Ryland Grace, who wakes up on a spaceship light-years from home with no memory of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he uncovers his mission: solve the riddle of a mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must use his scientific knowledge and unorthodox thinking to save Earth from extinction — but an unexpected friendship with an alien means he may not have to do it alone. It stars Ryan Gosling and is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, based on Andy Weir’s novel. If you saw and like the movie “The Martian” you’ll probably like this too.

California Moment

I flew back from the Bay Area the same day that the Artemis 2 was scheduled to land off the coast of San Diego. I think they were rerouting some of the flight patterns in and out of the airport that day because of it so we were treated to a lovely view of the coastline. Below is the famous Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla. If you are planning a visit, you can stay at The Lodge at Torrey Pines . Both the resort and the course have stunning views of the Pacific.
