Elements of Ralph Lauren-Inspired Style
Ralph Lauren has a gift for making American style feel effortlessly chic, and his design philosophy of classic pieces, quality craftsmanship, and timeless elegance translates beautifully to home entertaining. If you’ve ever admired that sophisticated Americana look in his stores and wondered how to bring it home, here are some tips.
A Mixture of Texture
Creating a Ralph Lauren-inspired patriotic tablescape is all about incorporating refined touches that feel both polished and welcoming. Ralph Lauren’s design aesthetic spans everything from coastal to modern to rustic to preppy, but what ties it all together is his masterful ability to mix textures and elements. He’s known for combining refined pieces with rustic finds, creating spaces that feel collected over time rather than decorated all at once.

Pattern Play
What makes Ralph Lauren’s design aesthetic so timeless and appealing is his ability to incorporate time-worn elements and mix them with eclectic pattern plays of stripes, plaids and florals, adding depth and interest. Whether layering rugs, table textiles or bedding, this mix of patterns feels down-to-earth and welcoming.

Color Palette
The Ralph Lauren signature look is his use of classic navy, crisp white and rich red as the foundation of his designs. This color palette lends itself beautifully to patriotic decor. The iconic Ralph Lauren American flag sweater is the perfect symbol of his love of classic American style.

And who can resist this dapper Ralph Lauren Polo teddy bear?

Small, Intentional Touches
Ralph Lauren interiors do not try to stick with a literal “theme”. Instead, they consist of small intentional touches meant to convey a mood or a sense of place. Subtlety is a hallmark of his designs.

Creating a Ralph Lauren-Inspired Patriotic Tablescape
Table Linens
Start with a crisp white linen tablecloth as your foundation—it doesn’t need to be fancy, just good quality that gets softer with each wash. Layer a navy blue or red table runner down the center with some texture or a add simple pattern to break up all that white. The key is mixing different fabric textures—maybe a smooth cotton base with a woven or slightly nubby runner—to create that relaxed, lived-in feel that’s still put-together. For this tablescape I draped a large piece of red patterned fabric diagonally across the white tablecloth. The tiny blue flowers on the fabric inject some pattern in the design.

Chair Covers
I used to have a set of wooden folding chairs, which I used a lot. Unfortunately, they were donated during one of our recent moves, so I borrowed some regular brown folding chairs. To dress them up, I used inexpensive navy blue chair covers. They easily stretched over the chairs and made them look much more attractive. They are reusable too!

Placemats
Flag-themed placemats by Nautica add some Americana to the table. They are the only literal patriotic emblems used in this tablescape.

Napkins
I used floral denim-colored napkins that have been washed many times and are super soft. The napkin rings are rattan and add texture to the table.

Dinnerware Selection
Start with classic white porcelain dinner plates—they’re timeless and make your food look amazing. Layer in navy blue salad plates or chargers underneath for that perfect contrast that ties your whole palette together. Don’t be afraid to mix in subtle patterns like delicate florals or simple stripes, but keep it understated. Hunt for vintage or vintage-inspired pieces that add character and authenticity—they’re what make your table feel collected and personal rather than straight from a catalog.

Glassware
Good glassware makes all the difference. Crystal or high-quality clear glass feels substantial and catches the light beautifully. Mix different heights like water glasses, wine glasses, and champagne flutes to create visual interest on your table. For an extra touch of coordination, consider glasses with subtle navy rims that tie back to your color palette without being too matchy-matchy. The bird motifs on the water glasses add an unexpected nod to nature.

Flatware
Choose polished silver or warm gold-toned flatware with classic, clean lines—nothing too ornate or fussy that competes with your elegant palette. Stick to timeless patterns that feel substantial in your hands. This is the perfect time to get out the “good” silver if you have it!

The Color Story: Red, White & Navy
Why Navy Instead of Bright Blue
While bright blue can feel very of-the-moment (and might look dated in a few years), navy is like the perfect pair of jeans—it never goes out of style and works with everything. This table would also be pretty with a navy blue fabric instead of the red.
Navy blue works so much better than bright blue for a few key reasons. It plays beautifully with natural materials like wood and stone, creating that effortless, pulled-together look we all want. There’s something inherently classy about navy—it has that timeless Ralph Lauren vibe that feels expensive and sophisticated without trying too hard.

Incorporating Red
Use a rich and sophisticated red rather than bold and primary. Draw inspiration from nature—the deep burgundy of roses, the warm red of ripe strawberries, or the glossy crimson of fresh cherries. These natural reds feel organic and inviting rather than jarring. These deeper, more complex reds complement navy so beautifully.

White as the Hero
White is the real star of this color palette, serving as the clean, crisp foundation that makes everything else pop. Think of it as your canvas—it brightens the space and keeps the navy from feeling too heavy or masculine. Fresh white flowers are your best friend here: fluffy hydrangeas, classic roses, or dreamy peonies instantly add life and elegance to your table. These hydrangeas came from Trader Joe’s.

A Ralph Lauren Touch
To capture that signature Ralph Lauren sophistication, add subtle touches like brass candlesticks or silver serving pieces. The goal is to create a vignette that looks collected over time. Fine china, crystal glassware and silver flatware can mix with informal textures like rattan. I paired some antique brass candlesticks with chunky silver ones for a collected feel. Simple tapers keep it elegant.

Fresh Flowers
Fresh flowers are a must. A casual arrangement of garden roses in a silver cup add a touch of romance. Hydrangeas are a classic summer flower and look spectacular in big bouquets.

Where to Find Ralph Lauren-Style Elements
You can find Ralph Lauren-style elements without the designer price tag in plenty of places. Vintage shops and antique stores are treasure troves for authentic brass accessories, equestrian pieces, and classic books that give you the real deal. I found several items in this tablescape this way. The brass candlesticks were from Etsy, and the napkins, red cloth, silver cups and bird motif glasses were thrift store finds. The crystal pitcher originally belonged to my mother.

Online retailers like Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, and even Amazon have great options for specific items like brass candlesticks or nautical rope details. The silver candlesticks in this tablescape are from Pottery Barn, as are the white plates. The rattan napkin rings and white tablecloth are from Amazon. The flag placemats and crystal lowball glasses are from HomeGoods.

For budget-conscious decorators, consider DIY alternatives—spray paint thrift store finds in brass tones, stack books you already own, or repurpose woven baskets from discount stores to get the look for less.
