The Ultimate Travel Accessories Guide: Essential Items Every Traveler Needs

In this post – Pack smarter, travel better, and arrive in style with these carefully curated travel essentials.

I have packing on the brain because we’re headed back to Hawaii next week. We’ll start in Honolulu for business and then head over to Maui for a few days to relax.

There’s something magical about that moment when you’re standing at the departure gate, passport in hand, ready for your next adventure. But behind every seamless travel experience lies one crucial element: the right travel accessories. After years of flying from the foggy mornings of the California coast to Hawaiian beaches and other destinations near and far, I’ve learned that it’s not about packing more—it’s about packing smarter.

Whether you’re planning a quick weekend getaway to Carmel or a month-long European adventure, these essential travel accessories will transform your journey from chaotic to effortless. Trust me, your future self will thank you.

Travel Bags: Your Journey’s Foundation

The right bag can make or break your travel experience. It’s not just about capacity—it’s about functionality, durability, and style. I have had the same black travel backpack for years – it’s not from a fancy designer label, but it is the perfect design for me. It has lots of pockets and room for all of my stuff, plus it slides easily over the handle of my carry-on.

My tried-and-true packing method is to bring my travel backpack, my carry-on, and a small crossbody purse. As you’re probably aware, the airlines are strict about the one carry-on + one personal item rule. I leave enough room in my backpack to tuck in my purse prior to boarding. This strategy has worked well for me for years.

Read on for more tips about selecting the perfect bags and accessories for your next big trip.

Carry-On Suitcase with Four Wheels

A hardshell carry-on with four spinner wheels glides effortlessly through airports. Look for lightweight materials like polycarbonate, TSA-approved locks, and interior organization pockets. The key is finding one that maximizes packing space while staying within airline size restrictions. I love my carry-on from Away, but it’s a bit pricey. There are other more budget-friendly and colorful options available to consider though, if you don’t want to blow your entire vacation shopping budget on a suitcase.

Versatile Tote Bag

Perfect for quick getaways or as a personal item on flights, a quilted bag is both fashionable and practical. Choose one with a separate shoe compartment, multiple pockets for organization, and shoulder straps comfortable enough for extended wear. Bonus points if it has an outer sleeve to slip over your luggage handle.

Compact Backpack

Essential for exploring destinations, a lightweight backpack is ideal. Look for water-resistant materials, comfortable straps, and enough space for essentials like water bottles, cameras, and souvenirs.

Crossbody Travel Bag

Security meets style with a slim crossbody bag designed for travel. Hidden zippers, and slash-resistant materials keep valuables safe while maintaining easy access to passports and cards. Wherever I travel, I always bring a crossbody so that my purse is safely in front of me when I’m out exploring.

Checked Luggage

When carry-on space isn’t enough, aim for 28-30 inch bags with four spinner wheels and telescoping handles. Hardshell cases protect fragile items better, while soft-sided bags offer flexibility and lighter weight. Look for reinforced corners, quality zippers, and interior organization features like compression panels. Choose expandable options for souvenir space, and always check the bag’s empty weight against airline limits. Bright colors or distinctive tags make spotting your bag on carousels much easier. We swear by these cushioned handle wraps to help identify our bags on the luggage carousel!

Packing Cubes Set

This isn’t just a trend—it’s a revolution. A good set of packing cubes transforms your suitcase from a black hole of wrinkled clothes into an organized closet. I have to admit, I was late to the party on packing cubes, but now I’m a convert! Choose lightweight, durable options in different sizes. Pro tip: use one cube exclusively for dirty laundry.

Document Organizer Wallet

We recently traveled to Denmark and these passport covers were perfect for stashing not only our passports, but also our boarding passes, travel insurance, hotel confirmations, etc. Choose one with a pen loop because you’ll always need to fill out customs forms at the most inconvenient moments.

Electronics: Staying Connected on the Go

Modern travel relies heavily on technology, so having the right electronic accessories is crucial for staying connected, entertained, and organized. It’s a bummer to have your phone die when you’re on the go. Thankfully, there are so many good portable chargers on the market now. Just be aware of the rules surrounding carrying portable chargers on different airlines.

Portable Charger with Fast Charging

A high-capacity power bank with fast charging capability is non-negotiable. The newest chargers are magnetic so you can attach them to your phone case for charging on-the-go. I recently switched to a magnetic case and it’s been a game-changer.

Multi-Port USB Wall Charger

Skip carrying multiple chargers with a compact charger that can power laptops, tablets, and phones simultaneously. If you are heading out of the country, be sure to bring a universal travel adapter with voltage converter.

iWatch Charger

I have an iWatch that I sometimes forget to charge, so a portable magnetic power bank just for my watch is super helpful.

Cable Organizer Pouch

Tangled cables are the bane of modern travel. A dedicated electronics organizer with elastic loops and mesh pockets keeps everything from charging cables to earbuds perfectly sorted. Having all of that stuff in one place makes it easy to find in your bag mid-flight and will save you lots of time and aggravation.

Phone Holder

Nothing is worse (in terms of first-world problems) than holding your phone to watch a movie the entire flight. Having a place to hang up your phone so you can watch hands-free liberates your hands and frees up space on your tray table. You can find them in both clamp and magnetic styles.

Comfort Game-Changers

Being comfortable on a flight is super important. You don’t want to arrive at your destination exhausted. A good neck pillow and a comfy blanket can help you rest easier.

Travel Pillows

Forget those bulky horseshoe pillows. Modern memory foam travel pillows are compact, supportive, and actually help you sleep on planes. Some even come with removable, washable covers—essential for those long-haul flights.

Compression Socks

Your legs will thank you, especially on long flights. Compression socks improve circulation and reduce swelling. Choose moisture-wicking materials and fun patterns that make them feel less medical and more fashionable. We swear by these on longer flights. No more cankles when you land!

Lightweight Travel Blanket

Airlines are notorious for arctic cabin temperatures. A packable, lightweight travel blanket that stuffs into its own pouch is worth its weight in gold. Look for ones made from soft, quick-dry materials.

Wellness and Hygiene Must-Haves

Staying clean and fresh on any trip is a priority. These items will help you accomplish that!

Refillable Travel Bottles Set

Invest in high-quality, leak-proof travel bottles for your skincare and hair products. Silicone squeeze bottles are nearly indestructible and easy to clean. Label them clearly—nobody wants to brush their teeth with face wash at 6 AM.

Hanging Cosmetics Case

Hotel bathroom counter space is often at a premium, so having a way to store your toiletries where they’re easily accessible and also out of the way is a must. Look for clear, wipeable pockets so you can quickly find what you need.

Waterproof Bags

A waterproof bag is a lifesaver if you need to pack but you have items that are damp. They are also handy for storing items like sunscreen in your beach bag to prevent leaks.

Toothpaste Chews

If you’ve every been on a long-haul flight, you know that your mouth can feel icky when you wake up from a nap or after eating. These little chews are a great way to clean your teeth when you don’t want to brush them in an airplane lavatory. Your seat mates will thank you.

Travel Pill Case

I love this pill case because it’s large enough to organize prescriptions and hold everyday essentials, like pain relievers.

Travel Mirror

I like to bring a lighted travel mirror with me on trips in case the hotel one doesn’t have light or magnification. (My eyes aren’t what they used to be!) It also comes in handy for freshening up on a plane at the end of a long flight.

Putting It All Together

The secret to great travel accessories isn’t buying everything—it’s choosing items that serve multiple purposes and genuinely make your journey easier. Start with the essentials that address your biggest travel pain points, then gradually build your collection.

Remember, the best travel accessory is the one you’ll actually use. That designer luggage tag might look Instagram-perfect, but if it doesn’t survive one trip through baggage handling, it’s not worth the investment.

Your Next Adventure Awaits

Travel accessories should enhance your journey, not complicate it. Whether you’re catching a flight from SFO to chase sunsets on a distant beach or exploring hidden gems closer to home, the right gear makes every mile more enjoyable.
