Spring is Almost Here!
The days are lengthening and the sun is shining a little higher overhead each day! It’s time to start thinking about adding some spring decor to your outside spaces. In this post, I’m sharing an easy DIY transformation using a simple succulent arrangement from Home Depot. Whether you celebrate Easter or not, you can add a little color to your succulent containers to welcome spring into your garden.
Supplies Needed:
A succulent container garden
Spring picks from your local craft store (these bunnies, chicks, and nest are all from Michaels)
Moss craft sticks (Michaels)
Assorted sea shells
A length of rope (enough to wrap around the edge of your container)
A glue gun

Step 1: Add the Rope Trim to Your Container
For this project, I used a large shallow succulent container arrangement I found at my local Home Depot here in San Diego. If you’re familiar with my blog, you know that I don’t have very many live plants because we live in both the Bay Area and in San Diego and it’s tricky to take care of them. However, succulents are the perfect low-maintenance solution for our beach home because they can go for longer periods of time without water.

To start, I glued a length of rope around the outside rim of the container to give it a nautical feel.

Step 2: Add Shell Accents to the Container
For the next step, I glued four large scallop shells around the sides of the container. To space them evenly, I glued one front and back and then rotated the container a quarter turn and glued one front and back again. I then glued a small scallop shell between each of the larger ones, for a total of eight shells.

Step 3: Add Spring Accents
I found these adorable bunnies and chicks at Michaels. They are made out of a paper material and remind me of hydrangeas.

I also found a pretty bird’s nest with eggs and thought it added a pretty pop of spring colors to the container. I tucked the nest into one of the succulents and added the chicks and bunnies to the arrangement.

Step 4: Make the Seashell Picks
For the final touch, I made eight seashell picks using moss craft sticks and some pointed seashells from my collection. I put a drop of glue inside each shell and inserted the craft stick. The sticks are bendable, so it was easy to shape them as needed for a good fit.

Step 5: Add Shell Picks to Arrangement
I tucked the seashell picks in between the succulents, bending as needed. They add a fun coastal touch to the container. Instead of Easter eggs, I tucked in a couple of egg-shaped cowry shells to complete the design.

Step 6: Enjoy!
The best part about this project is that I can remove the bunnies, chicks and nest from the container after Easter and leave the shell picks in year round for a fun coastal container garden.

Thanks MaryJo! Always fun to work with you!
What a wonderful beach oriented container garden, Susan. I love the use of succulents especially for their low maintenance quality. Your addition of a seashell motif is perfect for a year round container. The bunnies and chicks are so cute and pretty. They give the whole container a lovely spring/Easter presence. The seashell picks are great and I may use that idea…simple yet effective. It has been such fun joining you today. Thanks so much for inviting me.
