In this post – a tour of the grounds of our beach townhome. Plus, join me on a visit to the Del Mar Dog Beach Memorial Garden. Also, the Flower Fields in Carlsbad are open and I just bought my tickets!
Happy Spring! Who’s ready to head outside? I know I am! One of the best things about living in California is the beauty that surrounds me when I step outdoors. Whether I’m hiking or going for a walk near the beach, being surrounded by nature makes me happy – especially in the springtime! Can’t wait to visit and share. Things are blooming around here!

Here in San Diego, where the sun shines seemingly all the time, it’s a gardener’s paradise year round, and I would imagine especially in the springtime. While we don’t have an actual yard here to call our own, we get to enjoy all of the beauty without all the work! Today I’m sharing some pretty pics of spring blooms in our beachside complex.

One of the things that I learned about the plants San Diego is that they grow BIG. As in HUGE. Succulents grow like weeds here. They make me think of ancient prehistoric plants. Did you notice the trees in the background of the photos above? They’re actually large Birds of Paradise plants! I’ve tried to grow smaller versions of these in the Bay Area and have failed miserably. They don’t like to be too hot or too cold and the temps are more extreme up north than they are here in SoCal. I guess I was meant to enjoy them here instead. If you’d like to learn more about Birds of Paradise plants and how to grow them, this is a great resource. I had no idea there are so many different types!

This view of the ocean from the bluff above the beach is something I don’t think I’ll ever take for granted. The vibrant purple, pink and orange flowers look spectacular contrasted with the blue of the Pacific.

Even sweet Belle, our border collie, has her own little tropical garden for when nature calls. 🙂

Speaking of our dog Belle… the highlight of her day is going to the Del Mar Dog Beach. We are fortunate to live within walking distance, so we try to take her there almost every day when we are here. As you approach the entrance to the beach, there is a beautiful community garden. One of the most special things about this garden is the memorial to all of the dogs who loved this beach and have since passed away. Seeing all of the names painted on the rocks here is truly touching.

The Del Mar Dog Beach Memorial Garden is located right off Highway 101 in north Del Mar and there is paid parking available if you’d like to visit.
I’m excited to visit another garden for the first time – The Flower Fields in Carlsbad. I just bought my tickets as a Mother’s Day gift to myself. If you’re interested in going tickets are only available online. You can find more information about dates and tickets here. 🌸
