How to Style a Spooky Seaside Doorway

In this post, I’m sharing fun ways to decorate your front entrance for Halloween. Since we will be spending Halloween here at the beach in San Diego, I thought I’d lean in to a creepy coastal vibe. I decided to go with an under-the-sea theme with a scary twist. Follow along if you dare!

Creepy Potted Plants

The first thing I did to spruce up our tiny entry is to add succulents to the pot next to our door. When we moved into our home here we quickly learned that succulents are the way to go here in sunny San Diego. They practically grow like weeds! The sunlight down here can be intense and many other kinds of plants can’t take the heat!

To start, I chose one of my favorite succulents called “Fire Sticks” (euphorbia tirucalli) to plant in the back of the pot because I think it resembles coral. Next, I used Sedum “Gold Dust” to fill in the front area as “seaweed”. I also incorporated a selection of spooky black plastic plants from Michaels and some tall faux willow twigs from Amazon. Lastly, since I already have a large collection of shells and pieces of coral, I used them as filler in the empty spaces.

My favorite parts of this project were the mermaid and fish skeletons I found on Amazon. I think they are so fun! I even found a deep-sea angler fish with a light-up lure that I put in our other potted asparagus fern along with some other fish buddies. To finish off the look, I filled in the scene with some black twisty branches, also from Amazon. I’m loving how these turned out!

Deep Sea Lanterns

I repurposed some large black lanterns for this project and turned them into little aquariums containing more creepy creatures. To start, I added white gravel to the bottom of both lanterns.

Next, I added a tall battery-operated black candle to the taller of the two lanterns, along with some black plastic “seaweed” and a mermaid skeleton. Finally, in the smaller lantern I added a skeleton fish with some more black plants and several pieces of coral. I love these scary little scenes!

Beware…Pirates Ahead!

As a big fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, I couldn’t do a spooky under-the-sea theme without adding some pirates! First, I framed the door with some black cheesecloth fabric and then added some mermaid and pirate skeletons from Michaels to greet visitors. Next, I draped a thick piece of rope, also from Michaels, above the door as a nod to being on a pirate ship. Lastly, I hung a large mermaid skeleton on our door on top of a repurposed black wreath. Beware of pirates!
