How to Make Pretty Coastal Fall Placemats

In this post I’ll show you how to make some pretty coastal fall placemats. They will add a rustic touch to your fall tablescapes.

Introduction

Fall is here and with it a change in your table decor is in order. If you love all things summery and coastal, make these pretty coastal fall placemats. They are an easy project that adds a touch of seaside charm to your table.

1 roll burlap

Scissors

Hot glue gun

Paint (white)

Stencils: Leaves | Coastal designs

Blank stencil sheets (to make your own designs)

Sponge pouncing brushes

Small shells

Step 1: Stencil Your Designs

Decide on the pattern you would like to use for your design. I decided to go with a random pattern of leaves, so I created my own stencil. (see below) Carefully stencil your design onto the burlap. Stencil a large enough area to cover at least the size of a standard round placemat. Allow paint to dry thoroughly before the next step.

Stenciling tips:

  1. Position stencil where desired, and press firmly with one hand.
  2. Load paint sparingly on a stencil brush or pouncer. Less paint is better. You can always add more.
  3. Apply paint using a dabbing motion.
  4. If creating a repeating pattern, be sure stencil is clean before repositioning.

To make your own stencil:

  1. Print out the design in the size you want on regular paper and cut out.
  2. Trace design on a stenciling blank and cut out.
  3. Use as directed above.

I already had an “oops” dot. I decided to use a small pouncing brush to add more to the design.

Step 2: Cut Out Mats

Trace around a round place mat on the burlap with a Sharpie and cut out the circle shape. Don’t worry about the Sharpie line, it will be covered by shells.

Step 3: Glue Shells Around Edge

Use hot glue to carefully glue the small shells around the outside edge of each burlap circle. I kept all of the shells pointing in toward the center of the design, but it’s personal preference.

Step 4: Enjoy!

Use your new coastal fall place mats to add a touch of seaside charm to your autumn table.
