How to Make Charming Cookie Cutter Decorations for Valentines Day

In this post – how to turn heart cookie cutters into cute Valentines Day decorations.

Once January rolls around, it’s only a matter of time before the stores are full of Valentines Day decor. Why not repurpose some things you already own to make some cute decorations yourself? Since I’m not much of a baker, I decided to repurpose some heart cookie cutters into pretty mosaic Valentines heart decorations. This was an easy project and the results are adorable!

Heart cookie cutters – various sizes

Valentine ribbons

Red satin ribbon 1” wide

Heart-shaped drinking straws – red and pink

Scissors

Glue Gun

Step 1: Trim the straws

I found these adorable heart-shaped drinking straws on Amazon but you can also use any type of drinking straw. Using the width of my cookie cutter as a guide, I marked the straws and cut them into short lengths. The number of pieces you’ll need depends on the size of your cookie cutter.

My cookie cutters are a little over an inch wide, so I was able to cut each straw into nine pieces. Tip: I recommend wearing eye protection during this part – the straw pieces were flying all over the place!

Step 2: Glue in place

I used hot glue to attach the straw pieces to the inside of the heart. I alternated rows of pink and white. For this pattern I tried to keep all the heart shapes facing the same way.

Step 3: Glue ribbon

When the heart was completely filled in, I used hot glue to attach a red satin ribbon to the outside edge. I purposely used a ribbon that was about the same width as my cookie cutter. I added a second smaller ribbon for detail. At this point you can attach a hanging loop if you want one.

Step 4: Repeat With Other Sizes

I think these look great in a group so I made two more. I used a different pattern and ribbon combination for each. They will be cute on our mantel or in our kitchen. Do you decorate for Valentines Day? I’d love to hear your ideas!
