What is a cloche?
Historically, cloches originated in France. The word “cloche” means “bell-shaped” and can refer to both glass cloches used to propagate plants, and bell-shaped hats. Cloches are also used in kitchens for covering and displaying food, as well as for smoking cocktails. I love them because they are so fun to fill and display and they work for any holiday or in any room in your home.
Where can I buy one?
Cloches are available from many retailers. The one I used for this project was purchased at Michaels.

You can also find cloches at Target and on Amazon. If you’re really lucky, you might find a unique one at a thrift or antique store.

Inspiration
I was inspired to try my hand at making a decorative cloche when I spotted this pretty one at bhg.com.

I love the look of the moss at the base and the contrast between the glass cloche and rustic terra cotta bottom. This fall scene is simple and elegant. Although this cloche uses real ginko leaves, miniature pumpkins and moss, I decided to make a scene that would last for several months and used faux foliage.
Step 1: Assemble Your Supplies
You can use anything you have on-hand to make a pretty fall cloche. For this project I used some natural moss and bark pieces that I already had with some faux leaves and tiny pumpkins, berries and pinecones.

Flora FoM disc OR a thick piece of moss
Small faux fall decor (pumpkins, leaves, berries, pinecones)
Glue gun and extra glue sticks
Step 2: Assemble the Base of Your Display
If you can’t source a thick sheet of moss, you can use the floral foam disc as your base and cover it with moss. You may have to trim it to fit inside your cloche. I opted to use the thick moss on its own.
Begin by placing your tallest objects in the base. In this case, the leaves were the tallest objects, so I chose two different colors to start. Tip: Make sure your arrangement isn’t too tall for the cloche! You want to leave some space at the top of the arrangement.

Step 3: Add the Details
Next, I chose to place a piece of natural bark off to the side to resemble a log and used some hot glue to secure it in place.

I then glued two small pumpkins and a tiny pinecone on the piece of bark.
Tip: You don’t have to use the faux leaves as they come. Don’t be afraid to trim them and swap out leaves for berries and other smaller faux leaves like I did here. The berries slid right on to the stems where the larger leaves were. These simple swaps make for a more interesting display and keep the eye moving.

Step 4: Secure the Base
I used a small amount of hot glue to secure the moss to the base of the cloche. This will keep it from shifting around once the glass cloche is in place.
Step 5: Cover with Cloche
Once the arrangement is complete, carefully lower the glass cloche down over the arrangement. Double check to be sure none of the arrangement has been squashed against the glass.

Enjoy!
This is an easy decoration that will last throughout the fall season. Display your cloche on a mantel, on your entryway table or on a bookcase shelf. The best part is you can swap out your fall arrangement for something else later on!
