DIY Coastal Candle Jar: A Step-by-Step Guide

Introduction

Here in San Diego, the nearly year-round warm weather is great for outdoor living and dining, and candlelight is a must! In this post, I’ll show you how to create a beautiful coastal candle jar to light up any gathering. Let’s get to it!

1 1/2 gallon glass jar

Approx. 1 quart of sand

1 pkg rope 0.2 inches wide

Glue gun

Spray adhesive

Scissors

Assorted small seashells

Shallow tray, like a baking sheet

Assorted sea glass (I used blue tones, can be any color)

3” white pillar candle

Step 1: Glue the Sand to the Jar

Find a well-ventilated work area. Gather the tray, spray adhesive, glass jar, and sand. Place your tray on a flat surface, and cover with aluminum foil or plastic wrap if desired. Pour enough sand into the tray to make an approx 1/2” layer on the bottom. Smooth the sand with your hand. Set tray aside.

Leave the lid on the jar for this part. Holding the jar by the lid, lightly spray all sides of the jar, angling the spray can up from the bottom of the jar toward the lid. Most of the adhesive should be on the bottom half of the jar, gradually fading out toward the top. Tap all sides of the jar in the sand tray until the sticky parts are mostly covered. Then move away from the tray and spray the jar with second coat of glue, angling up same as before. Tap all sides in the sand again. Gently brush off any unwanted sand. Allow to dry completely.

Step 2: Add the Rope

Gather the rope, scissors and glue gun. For this step you will remove the lid from the jar and discard or save for another project. Starting in the middle of one of the sides of the jar, apply a thin stream of hot glue around the base section of the jar top. Carefully wrap the rope around the base of the jar top. Then cut the rope where it lines up with where you started and glue the end down.

Repeat this process 3 more times moving toward the jar opening, making sure each rope row is snug against the one next to it.

After the 4th row of rope is attached, select a shell large enough to cover the rope seam and use hot glue to secure it over the seam.

Step 3: Add the Sand, Candle & Sea Glass

Gather the rest of your sand, the candle and the seaglass. Stand the jar upright. Pour approximately 3-4 cups of sand into the jar, depending on how high you want the candle to sit. Lower the candle into the jar and nestle into the sand, adjusting as necessary.

Finally, tuck pieces of sea glass between the candle and the jar, going as high as the middle of the candle.

Creative Add-Ons:

Since I intend to use these candle holders year round here in San Diego, I kept them beach-themed. If you are going to only use them this fall, you might use sea glass in fall colors like yellow, orange and rust. Instead of using a shell to cover the rope seam, you could glue on a small fall leaf, small pinecones, etc.
