Create a Cozy Outdoor Space

In this post – how to create a cozy outdoor space to relax in, no matter how big or small.

Creating a welcoming outdoor space takes some planning, just as an indoor space would. What makes an outdoor space feel cozy? That depends on what your definition of cozy is.

For us, it means being able to entertain guests in our tiny Bay Area backyard with ease.

It means having enough ambient lighting for lingering outside after sunset.

It means having throw blankets available for when it gets chilly, and shade from the sun when it is warm.

It means candles and fire pits.

It means having a space that is a natural extension of our home.

When planning your outdoor space, whether it’s a deck, a patio, or even a small balcony, it’s important to think about how you want to use the space.

Find Comfortable Seating Solutions

Create Conversation Areas

One of the most important things to remember when selecting outdoor furniture is that you’re trying to create comfortable conversation areas. Arrange the seating so guests can face one another if possible, or can at least sit near one another.

Provide side tables, coffee tables and other flat surfaces for drinks, food and decor. Everyone should have a place within arm’s reach to set down a drink.

Sunbrella Fabrics

Sunbrella fabrics are the gold-standard for outdoor use. Less expensive furniture may use “weather” or “sun” resistant fabric, but I’ve learned the hard way that those fabrics will disintegrate after only one or two seasons. It’s best to spend a little more money up front to save money down the road.

Different Seating Options

If you have the space, using a mix of seating options like chairs, sofas, loungers and floor cushions gives you and your guests choices on where to sit.

Add Rugs

Outdoor rugs up the cozy factor big time. They define spaces and add softness. This woven cotton rug adds softness underfoot and is meant for outdoor use. It adds some pattern to a very neutral space.

Choose Your Shade

As I mentioned, California sun can be intense, so shade is a necessity here, especially during the warmest months. Fortunately, there are a lot of great options out there.

Add a Deck or Patio Cover

We have a wooden deck cover that allows in some sunlight but offers us needed shade during the middle of the day. We also have a roller shade that drops down to shield us from the afternoon sun.

Make Use of Umbrellas

Outdoor umbrellas are perfect for when you need flexible coverage. They can be moved around and adjusted as needed. They are usually the least expensive option for shade.

Other Shade Structures

Pergolas and awnings are good for more permanent shade. I love the modern look of a sail shade too. Sail shades are a great option for when you only want something semi-permanent. They also come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Add Outdoor Curtains

Outdoor curtains are perfect for privacy, sun protection, and adding instant coziness to a space. I added these curtains to our deck cover and they add just the right amount of softness to our deck.

Four outdoor curtain panels are held by these genius magnetic curtain tiebacks.

If it gets breezy, magnetic weights keep them from blowing around. Additional magnetic holders hold them closed when needed.

The super study outdoor curtain rod was easy to install using a drill. I was able to hang it up in just a few minutes. It was an easy update that makes a big difference.

Use Ambient Lighting for Evening Magic

Use String Lights

You can’t beat string lights adding light to a space at night. There are seemingly endless styles and shapes to choose from. The string lights on our deck extend around our patio area and provide beautiful light at night.

Lanterns and Candles

Lanterns and candles add to a more intimate and cozy atmosphere. This large citronella candle does double-duty as a mosquito repellent in the evening.

We have an iron chandelier (similar) that holds battery-operated candles for a little ambiance in the evenings. They are remote controlled and are much safer than real candles.

Solar Lighting

Solar lighting options are eco-friendly and need virtually no maintenance. They work wonderfully along pathways. This solar powered floor lamp is so cool! I’d love to have one for our deck.

Add Light in Layers

Layering different light sources, from overhead lighting to table height makes a space feel inviting and cozy.

Greenery and Natural Elements

Use Containers for Plants

Plants can add another decorative layer to an outdoor space. Container gardening is perfect for a yard like ours. We have all of our containers on a drip system so that they can survive on their own when we’re in San Diego.

Choose the Right Plants

Choose plants that are appropriate for the space and the amount of light they will get during the day. I selected these ferns for this shady corner of our deck, knowing they don’t like a lot of intense sunlight.

Out in the bright sun, succulents add life and color.

Plant Vertically

Don’t forget about the vertical spaces outdoors. Just like wall decor inside, adding plants and art to vertical spaces outdoors ups the cozy factor. These inexpensive self-watering planters add some interest to the space above our outdoor sofa.

Personal Touches and Accessories

Use a Variety of Fabrics

Outdoor fabrics like curtains can act as statement pieces and inject color and pattern into any outdoor space. Our space is very neutral, so that the plants take center stage. Different patterns and textures keep the seating interesting. Tip: Be sure to check fabric labels to see if they can be used outdoors, especially if they will be used in an exposed area.

Pillows in outdoor fabrics are easily changed out from season to season and add a cozy touch to a seating area. Cozy throws in complementary colors make the space inviting on a chilly evening.

Outdoor sculptures, art and windchimes personalize a space and can be conversation starters. These can be rustic found items, thrift store treasures, or handmade items like this precious wind chime my son made in grade school.

I love, love, LOVE water features in an outdoor space. The sights and sounds of trickling water is so relaxing. Our fountain is popular with the neighborhood birds during the day, so it provides entertainment as well!

Make it yours

A cozy outdoor space is all about feeling warm and welcoming, regardless of the size of your space. It should be a reflection of your home and your style. If you’re just beginning to make your own cozy outdoor space, it’s ok to start slowly with just a few seating pieces and add other elements gradually over time. Take time to enjoy the process of creating your own outdoor haven!
