6 Great Jeans Styles to Update Your Look for Fall

In this post, I’m sharing my thoughts on current jeans trends and sourcing some great styles for you.

Jean Styles I’m Loving Now

Autumn is the time of year to start thinking about putting away the shorts and pulling out the jeans. It also is a time for reevaluating your closet and asking yourself if your jeans need a style update. If you’re in a jeans rut, don’t worry! Take stock of your closet and then read on for my favorite new denim jeans trends this season.

1. Straight-leg

For comfort and style, looser, straight-leg jeans are my go-to. I have found a couple of pairs that I would like add to my wardrobe. I have my eye on a mid-rise straight jean in 1984 rigid pair from J.Crew with a cool detail on the leg openings that would look great with all kinds of different shoe styles. For a more relaxed look with some stretch, I like these full-length slim-wide jean in 1996 semi-stretch, also from J.Crew.

2. Cuffed

I’m also loving the trendy large-cuffed styles and have I already purchased a super-comfortable pair from Evereve and I’m eager to wear them a lot this fall. That particular style is unfortunately sold out but I found some similar from Nordstrom. I look for larger cuffs that are tacked to the jeans so they don’t need constant adjustment.

3. Skinny-ish

Skinny-ish jeans are making a comeback, which makes me happy, although I know they can be polarizing! I love wearing fitted jeans under an over-sized sweater or longer top – and by fitted I don’t mean painted on! The newer take on this style still leaves some breathing room and isn’t skin-tight. Both pairs from GAP below are fitted without being too tight. I really like the split-hem detail on the second pair!

4. Wide-leg

I’m also glad to see that wide-leg jeans are still going strong because I already own a pair that I love and plan to wear on repeat. Below are two wide-leg styles from Nordstrom and Madewell that would be a great on-trend addition to your closet.

5. Embellished

Now trending are jeans with studded details and patterns. I think jeans that offer a little something extra in their design are fun, whether it’s studs, gems or embroidery. The key to this style for me is subtlety, not the blinged-out jeans of the early 2000s. J.Crew has a great pair of studded jeans with wide legs (right) that I would wear on repeat.

6. Dark Denim

Dark denim isn’t necessarily a trend when talking about jeans, but every closet should have at least one darker pair of minimally-destressed jeans for a more dressed-up vibe. Alexa Chung, a former Madewell muse, has a current collaboration with the brand that includes some great options for the darker denim look.

The best part of being a grown-up (GenX here!) is the ability to pick and choose what trends I want to follow and which I’ll skip. For example, you will not see me wearing barrel jeans anytime soon! I know enough about my personal style to know that I will look and feel ridiculous in them so I’ll let the younger-Gens have them. They have a slightly bow-legged look that doesn’t appeal to me. However, to each their own, so here are a couple of styles that you might want to try.

I’m also on the fence about denim maxi-skirts, which are a popular substitute for jeans this fall. I like the look, but I’m not a fan of wearing that much heavy denim at once. If I decide to take the plunge though, I would definitely go with the darker denim skirt on the right. I love the button details and back zipper.

Another Y2K trend, the low-rise jean, is also trying to make a come-back. I can still remember the early aughts when low-rise was in style and I had just given birth to twins. Suffice it to say, I passed on that trend then (and still don’t love it today) but you do you!

I hope you found some denim inspiration today! Remember, although trends come and go, the best jeans styles are always the ones that you love to wear and feel good in!
