Coastal Pumpkins
If you live near the California coast, or anywhere else for that matter, and love neutral decor with a coastal twist, try making one of these pumpkins! It is a quick and easy project. Be sure to check out some of my other fall DIY projects at the end of this post too!

Supplies Needed
Cream-colored pumpkins (real or faux – I used faux)
A large tub or tray (to catch extra sand)
Step 1: Select & Trace Your Stencil
To start, choose a stencil that matches the size of your pumpkin. I started with a starfish design. Tape it to the side of your pumpkin so it stays put while you trace the design onto your pumpkin with a pencil. I chose to use a pencil so that the lines would be light and removable afterward.
Optional: If you would rather skip tracing the design and instead paint directly onto it, go to step 2.
Step 2: Apply Mod Podge
Select a paint brush (or a stippling brush if painting over your stencil.) Apply a generous amount of Mod Podge to the design. Don’t worry if the Mod Podge isn’t applied perfectly – you can always wipe away any mistakes.
Step 3: Sprinkle Sand
Place your pumpkin in a large tub or tray. Lightly sprinkle sand over the Mod Podge and gently shake or tap your pumpkin to remove any excess sand. If you find that the Mod Podge is drying too quickly, you can work in sections, going back and forth between applying the adhesive and then the sand.
Because the coral design below was more detailed, I applied the Mod Podge and sand a little at a time, painting one area at a time and then covering it with sand. Don’t be afraid to modify your design as you go. I added a few more details to the original stencil pattern. It was easy to wipe the Mod Podge and sand off if I didn’t like how it looked.
Step 4: Remove Any Extra Stencil Marks
Once I was finished adding sand, I had to let the Mod Podge dry. Afterward I was able to erase any visible pencil marks. This photo was taken before I erased them.
Step 5: Enjoy!
These pumpkins make a cute coastal fall accent indoors and out. I placed one near our front door to welcome guests to our home.
The other pumpkin greets guests in our small entry area. I love how it blends with my existing coastal decor.
