In this post – A complete guide to celebrating Dad in California style — from a coastal-inspired red, white and blue tablescape with menu ideas, to a curated gift guide covering every kind of dad at every price point.
Father’s Day is a great excuse to set a beautiful table. Whether we’re celebrating in the Bay Area with a backyard dinner on a warm June evening, or down in San Diego with a casual coastal spread overlooking the ocean, it’s always a chance to make Dads feel genuinely celebrated — not just appreciated in passing.

This year I wanted to pull together everything in one place: a tablescape that feels relaxed but polished, some menu inspiration, and a gift guide with options for every kind of dad, California or not. Because whether your dad is a grill master, a wine lover, a style guy, or just someone who loves being outside with a cold drink in hand, there’s something here for him!
The Tablescape: Coastal Meets Classic
For a Father’s Day table, I lean into a palette that feels both coastal and a little classic: navy, warm white, natural wood tones, and maybe a soft touch of red. It’s the kind of color story that works beautifully in a San Diego backyard or a Bay Area dining room, and it carries right into Fourth of July if you want to keep things up for a few more weeks.
Creating the Tablescape
Start with a simple linen runner in natural or navy down the center of the table. I covered our black dining table with a white table cloth so that the runner would pop.

Layer in wooden or woven chargers with clean white plates — I love the contrast of natural wood or raffia against crisp white.

The heart plates are ones that I usually pull out on Valentine’s Day, but I figured they also look great in a red, white and blue Father’s Day tablescape since it’s being made with love! ❤️
Keep the centerpiece low and unfussy. I repurposed some succulents that needed repotting into a centerpiece by planting them in this wooden candle mold. I added some rustic wooden stars on either side for added interest.

Tuck in a bottle of California wine or Dad’s favorite craft beer as part of the centerpiece. It’s practical and it looks great, plus the centerpiece becomes a gift itself! This red from BCellars is my husband’s favorite!

Tip: If you are planning on using folding chairs, these genius folding chair covers are a great way to dress them up!

The Menu: Keep It California
I’m not a food blogger, but Father’s Day really does call for good food — and California gives us so much to work with. Here’s are a few of our favorite California-style meals (with recipes!)
Bay Area Backyard BBQ
Grilled tri-tip with a Santa Maria rub – Tri-tip is a triangular cut of beef from the bottom sirloin cut, known for its rich flavor and tenderness. It is often grilled or roasted and is particularly popular in California, where it is sometimes referred to as “Santa Maria steak.” See this site for more information on this unique California cut of meat.
A loaf of sourdough bread from a local bakery if you can get it!
A big green salad with avocado and citrus
A bottle of Napa Cabernet or a Sonoma Pinot (we love wines from BCellars in the Napa Valley!)
San Diego Patio Dinner
Carne asada tacos or fish tacos (or Cardiff Crack from Seaside Market – IYKYK – also a tri-tip cut of beef)
Elote — Mexican street corn — because corn is the perfect side dish in the summer
A cold cerveza or a margarita on the rocks
Churros for dessert if you’re feeling ambitious
