In this post – 5 easy steps to setting up your own home yoga studio, plus free yoga classes you can do at home!
Since I’ve only just started to get back into practicing, it’s been interesting to see where my body is flexibility-wise in my 50’s compared to when I was in my 30’s. Safe to say, my joints are a little stiffer than they used to be! That’s one of the reasons I’m getting back into it – to hopefully slow down some of the age-related changes that can sneak up on you. I’ve also found that yoga not only improves my flexibility, but also helps with balance and core-strength, which are important in preventing injury in the future.
5 Steps to Creating Your Own Home Yoga Studio
Thinking about starting your own yoga practice? Designing a space to practice yoga at home doesn’t have to be difficult or super expensive. With a few mindful choices and some simple setup tips, you can create an inviting and functional space in your home to practice yoga.

My own yoga space is smack-dab in the middle of our family room, so all of the things I use need to be able to be stored away easily. (Tip: choose an open space in your home with a hard floor surface like wood or tile instead of a carpeted one because a harder surface offers more stability.) I store my gear in a basket that tucks away in a niche next to our fireplace.

Sample Setup
Here’s a quick example of what you might include in your home yoga space:

- A high-quality yoga mat in the center of the room.
- A pair of yoga blocks near the mat.
- A shelf or basket with a strap and bolster.
- A small table or corner for a speaker and essential oil diffuser.
- Full-length mirror on one wall.
- A few plants and calming artwork around the room.
1. Choose the Right Space
- Quiet and Private: Select a room or corner that’s relatively quiet and free from distractions. I’m using an open space in our family room with a large window and a view to the outside.
- Natural Light: If possible, choose a space that receives plenty of natural sunlight to create a serene atmosphere.
- Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation for fresh airflow, which is crucial for a comfortable practice.

2. Essential Equipment
- Yoga Mat: Invest in a high-quality, non-slip yoga mat. This is your primary surface for practice.
- Yoga Props: Blocks, straps, bolsters, and blankets can support and enhance your practice, making poses more accessible.
- Mirror: A full-length mirror can help you check your alignment in various poses. This is not mandatory but is very useful if you are a beginner.

3. Ambiance and Decor
- Colors: Use calming colors like soft blues, greens, or neutrals to promote relaxation.
- Sound: Incorporate speakers or a sound system for playing calming music or guided meditation sessions.
- Scents: Essential oil diffusers or candles with soothing scents like lavender or eucalyptus can enhance the sensory experience.

4. Digital Setup
- Screen: If you follow online classes, a TV or a large tablet stand can help you clearly see the instructions. I use my laptop on an elevated platform so that it’s in easy view whether I’m standing or sitting/lying down on my mat.
- Internet Connection: Ensure a strong internet connection if you are streaming classes or tutorials.

5. Extra Touches
- Plants: Adding indoor plants can improve air quality and add a touch of nature to your space.
- Comfort Items: Keep a small stool or chair, and a place to store your water bottle and towels within arm’s reach.
- Personal Touches: Incorporate personal items like artwork, inspirational quotes, or photographs to make the space uniquely yours.

Inexpensive (Free!) Yoga Classes for Beginners
I used to practice yoga when my kids were tiny and we were part of a club that offered yoga classes. When we decided to ditch our membership, my yoga mat gathered dust. I dabbled with the Peloton app and other virtual instructors, but they were all too hardcore. Fast forward nearly fifteen years (yes, you read that right!) and I’ve finally rediscovered my inner yogi! Thanks to stumbling upon the YouTube channel Yoga With Adriene, I’ve finally restarted my practice. She offers all levels of classes to people of all shapes and sizes. You can find out more on her website and follow her here on Instagram.
Hope this post inspires you to carve out a little space in your home and life for yoga. Do you practice yoga? Any tips for getting back into it? Let me know in the comments!
Namaste! Have a great week!
