5 Easy Spring Wardrobe Updates

In this post – I’m sharing five of my favorite spring wardrobe staples to help you transition from winter to spring.

Spring officially begins in just a couple of weeks, which means it’s time to start thinking about a wardrobe transition. Fall and spring, the so-called “shoulder seasons”, are often the trickiest to dress for. Here in California, the weather can swing back and forth between sunny and warm to rainy and chilly in just a matter of hours. Dressing for this can be a challenge. Fortunately, some of the same clothes that I wore to transition from summer to fall are equally appropriate as we move from winter to spring.

5 Favorite Transitional Wardrobe Staples

One the the most popular outfits I’ve posted on Pinterest is the one below. It’s a classic look that incorporates on-trend pieces in neutral colors. While I originally put it together as a summer to fall look, it’s equally appropriate as we move toward springtime. In this post I’ll break down why this outfit works as well in springtime as it does in fall. (For more on fall transitional looks, be sure to check out my post Seamless Style: Outfits to Take You From Summer to Fall.)

Sweater Tank Tops

Some of the most versatile pieces in my wardrobe are tank tops, particularly sweater tank tops. While cotton tanks work well in the warm summer months, sweater tanks are perfect for those days when a little warmth is needed. One of the most-worn items in my closet last fall was this relaxed scoop neck tank by Vince. It has a looser fit and a quality material that retains its shape. While not technically made from sweater material, it has the weight and feel of a light sweater.

This tank is perfect for layering and I’ve been able to dress it up or down. Although black doesn’t seem like a “spring” color, it pairs well with just about any other color, so it’s very versatile. If black isn’t what you’re looking for, you may also like this neutral one, or this fuchsia one, both from Evereve. The contrast trim on this Vince Camuto tank is also fun.

Cardigans

Cardigans are the hero of the shoulder seasons for the very fact that they keep our shoulders warm! Many women are also self-conscious about their arms, so a cardigan is the perfect solution for keeping them covered when wearing a tank top. I love a classic camel-colored cardigan, and this one by Anne Klein is very versatile.

Cardigans are great because they provide warmth and coverage without the bulk of a jacket. My favorite style is a classic button-up. If you’re looking for some more spring-like colors, you may like this pretty lilac crop cardigan by Splendid, a light and airy cream cardigan by Sanctuary, or this yellow crewneck cardigan by CeCe.

Cropped Jeans

As a tall woman (six feet to be exact) cropped jeans are my savior. They’re the most-worn pairs in my closet. Cropped jeans are perfect for spring days when you don’t want to wear heavy long jeans but you also aren’t ready for shorts. This on-trend roll cuff style I purchased last fall at Evereve has been on heavy rotation in my closet.

I don’t just love cropped jeans for their forgiving length, but also because they look great with so many different shoe styles. I love them paired with Birkenstock sandals, athletic shoes and flats. One of my other favorite new pairs this spring are this wide leg pair from Loft. They are super comfortable and flattering. I also like the look of these relaxed wide-leg cuffed jeans from Evereve. These raw-edged crop jeans from Evereve are also a fun casual look.

Mary Jane Flats

Ballet flats have been a style staple for the past few years, but the newest trend this spring is the Mary Jane flat. I have a black pair that I wore a lot last fall. They are a comfortable option for both casual and dressy looks. This Greta Ballet Flat from Madewell is a great basic pair that work well with lots of different looks. It also comes in eight colors!

I just added this woven pair of Mary Janes from Dolce Vita to my wardrobe for spring. Dolce Vita also has this natural raffia pair for warmer weather. This pretty rose-colored pair from Vionic would be perfect for spring.

Handbags

Springtime is the perfect time to think about switching up your handbag. This doesn’t mean you have to go out and buy a new one – although I’m not going to stop you! Sometimes all you need for a fresh look is a classic bag in a classic color. Leather bags are a year-round staple and they work beautifully in transitional outfits. This Madewell Mini Shopper tote in soft grained leather is a great classic bag.

Leather bags in spring colors are also a great addition to your wardrobe. For example, I love this lemon yellow leather bucket bag by Tory Burch. This fuschia Tabby bag by Coach is spring perfection. Kate Spade makes a beautiful neutral leather shoulder bag that would work with any outfit.
